Mediclaim: Know When Your Claim Can Be Rejected?

Mediclaim is your health insurance that reimburses your medical expenses in case of any hospitalization. It provides that much needed safety net in times of medical emergencies. Doesn’t it? With the same intention, Rakesh had taken a Mediclaim policy to cover him & his family up to Rs.5 lakhs of medical expenses. Within a few days of taking the policy, Rakesh’s mother underwent cataract surgery. However, when Rakesh submitted his claim, it got rejected. Why did this happen? Why did the insurance company not settle his claim?

The obvious reason for this rejection was that Rakesh’s policy was still in its waiting period. I am sure this has come as a surprise to you all. Does a Mediclaim policy have a waiting period? Well, friends, this is stated in the policy terms and conditions which is often ignored by most of us.

Many conditions can lead to the rejection of your claims, so it’s essential to read the policy document carefully. Let me walk you through these different conditions so that you do not face a similar situation.

  • Initial waiting period; this means claims arising at the start of the policy (this period varies from company to company) will be rejected by the company
  • Illness-specific waiting period. Eg. 2 years waiting period for cataract
  • Expenses incurred for Illness or treatments which are not covered under the policy
  • Injury or disease directly or indirectly caused by or arising from or attributable to war, invasion etc.
  • Any misrepresentation or fraud on your part
  • Incomplete claim form submitted
  • Relevant documents not submitted

Friends, in order to ensure that your claims are not rejected, remember to read the policy document carefully.
