Hydrogen mainly exists in compound forms like H2O (water). Passing electricity through water extracts hydrogen from it. Usage of renewable electricity like wind or solar power, results in calling produced hydrogen a Green Hydrogen. It is one of the cleanest sources of energy, with hardly any emissions. Fuel cells for cars and energy-intensive industries like fertilizers and steel can use it.
The world has awakened to the challenge of climate change and energy security. Countries worldwide view Green Hydrogen as a crucial energy source for reducing carbon emissions. The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26) has enhanced the global push for green hydrogen. The USA is firmly supporting green hydrogen and has announced setting up hydrogen hubs and production tax credits.
The Indian government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Which will transform India into a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. It has approved Rs 19,744 crore to incentivize the commercial production of green hydrogen. Government has set an ambitious target of 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) of green hydrogen production per annum by 2030. Fossil fuel imports will reduce by 1 lakh crore. Greenhouse gas emissions should abate by 50 Metric Ton. The mission expects to create atleast six lakhs’ jobs in the coming years.
The mission will promote pilot projects in emerging end user industries and production pathways. Green Hydrogen Hubs would be developed in regions having the potential to support large-scale production and utilization of green hydrogen. India has a favorable geographical location for green hydrogen production, with an abundance of sunlight and wind energy. Skilled manpower and robust supply chains are key focus areas for developing the complete ecosystem.
Let’s talk about NTPC in this space. NTPC has commissioned India’s first green hydrogen blending project in the piped natural gas network. Which is situated at NTPC Kawas township in Surat. NTPC plans to produce green hydrogen from its upcoming renewable energy park in the Rann of Kutch. It is planning to set up its first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh. Which will start with plying 5 hydrogen buses. It is estimated that NTPC will have around 15% market share of India’s total Green Hydrogen production by FY32.
